COURSE OBJECTIVE

To develop learners' ability to use digital technologies, communication tools and networks for the access and evaluation of information, communication with others and carrying out practical tasks.

COURSE ANNOTATION

Digital literacy has become an integral part of everyone's life, and it is also an integral part of the competences of an attractive worker, as digitalisation affects virtually all areas, and computer literacy is one of the core skills in today's labour market. Digital literacy is one of the skills that includes the ability to use digital technologies confidently and critically to find information, communicate and solve basic problems in all areas of life, and it also helps us to acquire other skills such as communication skills, language skills, etc.

The course is designed to teach the basic concepts of computing, the structure of a computer, the characteristics of information units and their storage, the capabilities of the operating system, and to help you learn how to use the Windows operating system and its file management tools (copying, moving, renaming, etc.) In addition, help to learn how to enter and organise data, calculate using formulas and functions, display data in charts using the spreadsheet programme Microsoft excel, and how to use the Google Chrome web browser, Gmail, Google search, Google Drive, Google tools, etc.

This 40 academic hour course includes the following topics:

  1. Introduction to digital literacy; (1 academic hour)
  2. Getting to know your computer and the Windows environment (5 academic hours);
  3. Managing files and folders in Windows (6 academic hours);
  4. Drafting texts: creating a Microsoft Word document (styles, page formatting, headings, illustrations, tables) (10 academic hours);
  5. Calculator: getting to know Microsoft Excel (10 academic hours);
  6. Communicating online (8 academic hours).

Course objectives:

  1. To introduce the basic concepts of information technology and the principles of digital literacy and to highlight the importance and impact of digital information in everyday life;
  2. To introduce basic computing terms and the different types of computing devices; provide knowledge and practical skills in using the Windows operating system, including its structure and basic functions;
  3. To teach how to use the logical structure of computer media; manage files and folders using the Windows operating system tools and how to organise and store data efficiently;
  4. To teach how to apply different text styles, format a document page, headers, footers, insert and organise tables and use illustrations in documents, apply the customisation areas of a word processor, and increase your efficiency with documents;
  5. To master data entry, management and analysis skills using Excel spreadsheet tools, present data in a variety of charts, and understand the applications and possibilities of spreadsheets.
  6. To understand the principles of the internet and know how to use the Google Chrome browser and its preferences; acquire knowledge and skills to browse the internet safely and use web-based email (Gmail), Google search, Google Drive and other tools effectively.

Learning methods: independent work, game-based learning, practical exercises, interactive activities.

Learning tools: computer, tablet, mobile device or other internet-enabled device, MOODLE.

Assessment of learning outcomes: self-assessment test in virtual learning environment – MOODLE.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this course you will:

  1. understand the importance of digital information and its impact on personal and professional life, and be able to evaluate and critically analyse it;
  2. learn basic computing terms, identify different types of computing devices, use the Windows operating system, and learn about the structure of computers;
  3. understand the logical structure of computer media, use basic operating system file and folder management tools, and work effectively with the most popular operating system, Windows;
  4. be able to apply Microsoft Word text styles, format pages, headers and footers, insert and organise tables, illustrate documents, and have a working knowledge of the applications of word processing;
  5. be able to use Microsoft Excel spreadsheet tools, enter and manage data, present it in charts, and have knowledge of spreadsheet applications;understand how the internet works, how to use Google Chrome and its settings, how to browse the internet safely, how to use Gmail webmail, Google search, Google Drive and Google tools.
